Canada’s Happy Trendy caught me off guard with this new EP Die Young. The brainchild behind HT, a kid named Dylan, has another project Kumon Plaza. QRO has written up both projects, dug both projects, but it seemed like Kumon Plaza — a 64-bit electro slow jam cult — had the look of the faster horse. But here comes a solid EP from Happy Trendy, supported by a world tour with the super fabulous Foxes In Fiction (see dates below) — so who the eff knows what beats in the heart of darkness?
Die Young has a few bleepy, bloopy influences from the Kumon Plaza joint, but mostly it’s a solid advance in the direction of the laidback electro mumblecore of Happy Trendy’s first release Old Friends.
