Johnny Marr is a living legend in alt-rock, probably always first & foremost for his guitar work in the iconic Smiths, but he also been a member of The Pretenders, Modest Mouse, The Cribs (QRO live review with Marr) & more, not to mention session work for Talking Heads & Hans Zimmer. His own solo output has understandably been in the shadow of all that, and if Fever Dreams Pts 1-4 doesn’t stand out on its own, it’s still yet another solid piece from this most solid of musicians.
Originally released as a series of four four-song EPs, the Fever Dreams LP is rather over-stuffed (sixteen tracks, over an hour long), and focused on synth-rock. All the songs are certainly enjoyable, like opener “Spirit Power and Soul” (QRO review), though rarely get above that – there is the searing “Ariel”, or the better big synthetica of “Tenement Time”. And there are slower, sadder pieces such as “Rubicon”, but still in the general vicinity.
If Fever Dreams doesn’t match Johnny Marr’s highs, those are some considerable highs, and it’s still worth a listen.
