Jonsi : Go Jónsi Birgisson, lead singer of Iceland’s best export, group Sigur Rós (QRO live review), is out with his new solo debut, Go.  The newly released album embraces the instrumental elements that make up Sigur Rós’ intricate and ethereal sound while removing itself from post-rock status and taking more of an indie pop direction.

The album opens with "Go Do", a heavily acoustic-sounding number with angelic flute melodies and pounding percussion.  Unlike Jónsi’s signature melancholy sound, Go consists of a lot more joyful and rapid pace sounds.  "Animal Arithmetic" embodies the same spirit of cheer drastically bringing the album to life.

Go was co-produced by Alex Somers, Peter and Jónsi during the summer of 2009, in Reykjavik and Connecticut.  The record encompasses Jónsi’s trademark falsettos, strong acoustic string arrangements, and a majority of the songs include English lyrics, as opposed to Sigur Rós’ preeminent made-up language.

One could clearly note resemblances to Sigur Rós, but Go notably distinguishes itself with its bouncy, rhythmic tunes.  Though Jónsi’s solo project is livelier and more energetic than previous works, it still entails those renowned symphonic elements.  The songs may not be melancholy, but tracks like "Sinking Friendships" and "Kolnidur" take you back to what everyone loves most about Jónsi.  The compositions are sophisticated, instrumental arrangements that certainly arouse feelings of all sorts.

Go is yet another example of Jónsi’s astonishing skill in combining classical instrumentation, experimental sounds and pop rhymes’ to create none the less another harmonic masterpiece.
