Laura Marling : Song For Our Daughte

Laura Marling long ago became an indie-folk darling, racking up Mercury Prize and Grammy nominations after building a considerable fan base. Yet she is still able to do even more, like sing to an imaginary future child, on the intimate, powerful Song For Our Daughter.

Marling has a world-wise nature that is pitch-perfect on Daughter, not too serious or too laid-back, not too bright or too despondent.  She gets up close and emotional on “Only the Strong” and “Fortune”, but wry in the twang opener “Alexandra”.  Yes, heartbreak is her stock & trade on excellent pieces such as the resigned “Held Down” and the beautiful “Hope We Meet Again” (“I should write to him tomorrow / I wrote that yesterday” is an absolutely killer line), but there is hope amid the degradation on “Song For Our Daughter”.

While we’re all alone inside and the future seems further away than ever, Song For Our Daughter is the touching piece of Laura Marling that we need right now.
