On June 19th, REO Speedwagon and Styx, two Illinois bands, continued something they’ve been doing for twenty-two years, as they took to the stage on a co-headlining tour. Accompanying them on the entire ‘Live & Unzoomed Tour’ is special guest, Loverboy. This tour also marks the 50th anniversary of the release of the debut Styx album as well as the 50th anniversary of REO’s singer Kevin Cronin joining the band. They came to West Palm Beach’s iTHINK Financial Amphitheatre.

Loverboy

Classic rock fans were not disappointed as Canadian rockers Loverboy kicked off the evening by working their way through the greatest hits of their catalog including the opener, the Bon Jovi co-written “Notorious”, from 1987, and the final Top-40 hit for the band. The tempo slowed for “Queen Of The Broken Hearts”, but picked right up for crowd favorite “The Kid Is Hot Tonight”. Without missing a beat, the boys sailed through more hits, providing a great kick-off to the evening.

REO Speedwagon

Styx and REO alternate opening and closing the show on consecutive nights. This night’s opener was REO’s turn and the crowd of mostly aging rockers couldn’t have been happier. The band started off with Kevin Cronin belting out the aptly named “Music Man” followed by the syrupy smash-hit “Take It On The Run”. The rest of the set was one monster hit after another, many ballads but also the rockers “Ridin’ The Storm Out” and “Keep Pushin’ On”. These guys are not phoning this in as part of a nostalgia tour cash grab. Every member of the band left it all on stage, nothing was phoned in.

Styx

Finally, the main event, at least on this night as Styx ran onto the multi-level stage. Opening with “The Fight Of Our Lives” from the latest album, Crash Of The Crown, the band played just as they did decades ago, inspired, tight, and hyper-kinetic. There were kicks and head banging, and hair-in-the-face guitar playing. This is a group that absolutely loves what it is they do. Sufficiently warmed up the boys went right into the hits starting with “Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)” and finishing with a second encore of “Renegade”. Other highlights included tasty guitar solos, a spinning keyboard riser, a solo piano Genesis cover of “Turn It On Again” with a short cover of Elton John’s “Rocket Man”, all performed on the aforementioned spinning piano. The crowd was exceptionally pleased to have former bassist Chuck Panozzo return to the lineup for a few songs this evening.

Entertaining and enthralling, this is a tour not to be missed. The tour will run through the Summer.
