Mac Miller : CirclesMention Mac Miller anytime in the last year and the first thoughts turn to his death, rather than his music. That’s understandable, considering Miller’s untimely passing at 26 from a drug overdose. What isn’t as understandable is the lack of discussion of the music the rapper made. That should be about to change with the posthumous release of the rappers final record, Circles.

Circles is an intimate collection of self-reflection, an obituary more akin to a singer-songwriter rather than a rapper. The change in musical style is attributable to the production of Jon Brian, known for his work with Fiona Apple and Aimee Mann. His touch is everywhere on this record, a collection of stripped down, if not bare tracks of that are not predictive of his death, at least explanatory of it. The songs are more folk than rap, there is actually only one rap track on the album. These are pieces of depression and loneliness while not alone.

This record is destined to become an instant classic, not just with Miller’s fans but with fans of chilled out songwriting and self-reflection, as well as with music fans in general.
