Matt Pond PA : Songs of Disquiet EPAs this COVID crisis drags on and on, artists have moved from livestreams and one-off singles to releasing whole albums, or at least EPs, made during the pandemic.  Matt Pond has collected some covers & instrumentals for his lovely Songs of Disquiet EP.

As Matt Pond PA, Matt Pond has been bringing the natural sounds of the outdoors indoors, and that continued through ending the ‘Matt Pond PA’ band name to ultimately bringing it back.  Fitting Songs opener “The Start” is the beautiful and carrying MPPA he is known for, but this is not a regular release.  Instead, there are instrumentals like the interlude “Summer Interlude” and the almost conversational closer “Face to Face”, as well as covers.  Underrated sixties act Shocking Blue get an aerial updraft with “Rock In the Sea” (it starts with, “Wish I was a bird in the sky”), while the late indie-punks The Thermals see their “Pillar of Salt” covered not once, but twice, first in the enchanting “(Still)” version, then later with the uplifting synthed “(Stirred)”, featuring Anya Marina (and a great video – QRO review).

This has been the worst summer ever, the first time that you’ve wished the season would end.  But there is beauty out there, like on Songs of Disquiet.
