Max & Iggor Cavalera : Live

The gnarly cedar plank-lined walls of the Grizzly Hall in Austin served as the backdrop for Come and Take It Production’s latest metal offering, “Max & Iggor Cavalera Return to Roots Tour’ on Wednesday, February 15th. Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Roots album, the siblings and founding members of thrash metal band Sepultura, ended the Texas leg of their tour to a nearly capacity crowd of seasoned devil’s horn throwers.

Max CavaleraDecked out in camo and black t-shirts, the brothers took the stage and immediately ripped into opening track “Roots Bloody Roots”, then to the Brazilian-flavored song “Attitude”, featuring a berimabau musical bow. Despite two decades passing between the release of Roots and this concert, Max’s accented growl and Iggor’s double bass drum assault resonated just as powerfully as they did in the recording.

As fans began to fatigue in the circle pit after “Born Stubborn”, Max with his one massive dreadlock dug deep into his pocket and rained guitar picks on the crowd before serving up some high-fives. After a stage reset, the band took it down a notch and moved into more tribal territory with Iggor on the stage alone for “Itsari”, then joined by Max and opening band Full of Hell’s drummer David Bland on drum support.

Nearing the end of the set, Max led a group chant of “Full of Hell rules!”, then “Immolation Rules” before saying, “Ready to continue?” and launching into the last track on the album, “Dictatorshit”. The performance ended with two covers, “Procreation (of the Wicked)” by Celtic Frost and “Ace of Spades” by Motörhead before a fast version of “Roots Bloody Roots”. Max closed the show by saying, “Metal is alive and well in Texas!” The tour goes through early March and heads east before ending with two California dates in San Francisco and Santa Ana.
