On the cold evening of Thursday, February 11th in the creative heart of Nottingham, the scene was set for a performance from Manchester band, MONEY. Having formed in 2011, MONEY have released three studio albums, of which The Shadow of Heaven (QRO review) and their brand new project, Suicide Songs, have been released on both sides of the Atlantic.
As the melancholic indie-rock began on stage, it started to seep into the music of your soul. With songs such as “I’ll Be the Night”, “You Look Like a Sad Painting On Both Sides of the Sky” and “Cocaine Christmas and an Alcoholic’s New Year”, there is a very real vulnerability in presence and a heart-on-your-sleeve approach that is the warming sadness of many a great musician.
With lyrical splendour and cathedral vocals, MONEY weaved their way through an emotionally charged performance at Nottingham’s Bodega club. All were entranced. The string section enhanced this feeling, pushing the music higher and brighter into the streams of our consciousness.
MONEY are a triumph. With shades of The Smiths, Interpol and Mercury Rev, this is band that has to be on your to-hear-list and if you’re very lucky, your to-see-list.
