The mind behind Happy Trendy belongs to Dylan Khotin-Foote, who also makes music under the Kumon Plaza moniker. QRO reviewed Kumon Plaza’s Cliff back in 2010, and we loved the clean crisp strokes of 64-bit electronica. So much so it landed in my year end list.

Dylan’s adventure as Happy Trendy is no doubt a more lo-fi outing. The vocals sound like they’ve been recorded on the fly, from the inside of a shoebox, and the synth textures have a unpolished, if playful, hard-edged Casio quality. But therein lies the charm. If you’ve ever dug through the 7" stack at your local record store in search of obscure import releases of your favorite band’s sideprojects, then you’ll appreciate the diamond-in-the-rough attraction of Old Friends. It’s quiet, meditative, completely unpretentious bedroom pop that wins you over without trying at all.

‘Like’ the track "YWGY".
