REPEAT/REPLAY

I’ve been digging on this album so much I had to drop another MMM-MMMP3 off Don’t Call Me. Stream "Captain Craig" below — I’ll stand by my original, rambling write-up:

Some people talk about a 90s revival and point to a new band like Yuck or classic acts like Pearl Jam bringing back the grunge sound to a generation that grew up in the shadow of Kurt Cobain’s suicide, but never really "got it." Not that anyone really "got it" though.

What gets forgotten in that picture is the underbelly of the underground during that period of rock n roll. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana: these weren’t underground acts. These were big time, brand name grunge. Besides the mainstream-alt scene, there was a whole crop of genuinely underground artists having a field day on labels like K Records, Kill Rock Stars, Sub Pop and more. Jangly, lo-fi (when lo-fi was how you actually had to sound if you didn’t have big $$$ to record) music acts that loved a pop hook delivered with post-punk gusto.

No You Hang Up remind me of those acts. The old school 90s underground, the catchy compositions vibing on 4-track textures, the instrument parts just a little bit out of control. One-take wonders from yesteryear, all sandwiched together in the fanstastic LP Don’t Call Me.

Normally I don’t wait until the third paragraph to mention the band’s name, but I guess I had a lot to say this time. Love you dudes! Check out their Bandcamp and Facebook for more!
