Polvo’s 2009 reunion was such a pleasant surprise not only because we got to hear their amazing old songs onstage again, but mainly because they managed to release an album that was more polished than their old material and (almost) as good. Something quite rare to achieve in the "reunited bands"-world. Still fresh from their reunion tour, they’re now back with this 7" mixed by Mitch Easter on Merge Records, a preview of the forthcoming album whose title and release date are yet to be announced.
Brylawski-sung "Heavy Detour" is a continuation of the semi-proggy direction Polvo took with In Prism, but also sees a more orchestral sound thank to some Helium-esque electronic strings, and, especially towards the end, a new psych-metal vibe reminiscent of bands like Dead Meadow and Danava.
The Ash Bowie’s b-side "Anchoress" has a melodic, poppy feel with lighthearted keyboards and breathy backing vocals. In spite of the slower rhythm, its catchiness is reminiscent of In Prism "The Pedlar", and has a nostalgic vibe to it. The song is harmonised by a tense closing jam which seems to run long in good old Polvo tradition before fading out. If anything, it sounds a bit overproduced. The alternate mix (available as a digital download with the purchase of the 7") with its mid-fi production seems to fit the tone of the song better. (Eleonora Collini)
