Shane Palko has a new release, Swahili Surreal, and an African, folky, genre warped, mind-bending video for the single from it, “Metamorphosis”. What can be said of an artist who tries something new? Often it is too new, however, here the cultural charm of a foreign, rural town, combined with a modern musician make for some really energetic music, and touching atmosphere. The catchy guitar leading the way to a piece of natural beauty as others in the video eventually join Palko in his performance, and Wazzy in the studio number.
However, no matter how much Paul Simon’s Graceland, is here, there is also some more than unexpected damage over the joy in the video, hardship to be sure, but also pain. How these scenes of dancing and squalor work together is up to the listener in reality, all that can be safely said is the music is gorgeous, bravo! Shaun Palko.
“Metamorphosis” is a great, trippy, East African inspired lead to a hopefully greater album.
