Nathaniel Rateliff : And It's Still Alight

Nathaniel Rateliff has gone from playing noon at a SXSW day party (QRO photos) to headlining major venues with his band The Night Sweats. His contemporary alt-country goes down very well, Mumford & Sons without the baggage of being a Mumford or Son. Solo record And It’s Still Alright doesn’t wow experienced ears, but will do well for him.

With alt-country so mainstream it’s no longer really ‘alt’, Alright does traffic in sounds that most people have heard before & elsewhere, like the relaxed sway of opener “What a Drag” or the stripped to slow meaning closer “Rush On”. “Tonight #2” tries to be meaningful in its near-gospel, but much better done is the intimate touch & charm of “You Need Me”, which stands out as being truly original.

Nathaniel Rateliff doesn’t reinvent the country wheel on And It’s Still Alright (he also doesn’t go – shudder – new country), but bears himself as best he can.
