These are haunting times, so it’s only natural for haunting sounds to come to the fore, from alt-rock getting spooky to EDM admitting that the party’s over. But Poliça have been haunting for years now, and doing more than just haunting, putting in the emotion to their music that it needs to be more. That continues with Madness.
At just seven songs and only just over thirty minutes, Madness is more of an extended play, but that ensures that it doesn’t come off as one-note (as extended electronics often can). It opens with the clear stand-out (another reason it feels a little EP-ish), the nice pressure and evocation to the synths in “Alive”. From there, loss pervades, with effects starker or more echoing.
As we hope times get better (they just have to, right?…) and huddle during these days, Poliça soundtracks our haunting era.
