Beach Bunny : HoneymoonThe first full length album by Chicago based indie-pop quartet Beach Bunny is a hot mess, a tasty, fun, musical mess. The album, Honeymoon, is the follow-up to a series of critically reviewed EPs and is exactly the happy pop we need right now, however all over the place it might be.

Unlike much of the pop music made today, Honeymoon isn’t overproduced or full of Autotuned tracks with no discernable instruments. This album has actual musicians playing actual instruments, and playing them quite well, especially the rock drumming of Jon Alvarado that wouldn’t be out of place on any rock record. What really stands out here is the songwriting that tells of anxiety and longing set to foot-tapping hooks and riffs. On “Ms. California” Lili Trifilio tells a lover of her jealousy while on “April” she declares that, “Sometimes I just want somebody / Someone that reminds me that they’ll always love me.” This is pop songwriting at its messy best, a treasure trove of emotions, emotions that everyone has but that not everyone has the talent to put into a well recieved album.

Listen to this record and enjoy the sunny pop. This record deserves to be enjoyed over and over.
