Cults : Hosts

For a decade or so now, Cults have been delivering revamped girl group pop that is undeniably enjoyable, but also often would suffer from a thinness.  Sure, you like them when you hear them on the radio or what have you, but do you actively seek them out?  Well, they do grow their sound a bit on new album Host.

Now, this is still Cults, so there is still the sweet pop like the catchy smile “Honest Love”, and a powerful sway to “No Risk”.  But opener “Trials” manages to be something of a haunting kiss-off, and there’s a slyness to the big band relax of the following “8th Avenue”.  Yes, Host has the shining voice of Madeline Follin and guitars & keys of Brian Oblivion, but it isn’t just those.

So, while we’re all stuck inside as the skies get darker, now might be the right time to put on something as simply nice-sounding as Cults.
