Early on with 2010 debut I Will Be, Dum Dum Girls were quickly slotted into the ‘girl-garage’ movement that had burst out in the likes of Vivian Girls (QRO album review), Frankie Rose (QRO photos), and others. But the Girls are Dum Dum, not Vivian, West Coast not East Coast, and began to distinguish themselves with follow-up Only In Dreams (QRO review) the following year. Too True continues that trend, as the group moves out of the garage and onto the haunting road.
With a lot more production value than your average garage-rock record, Dum Dum Girls thankfully don’t get lost in that, but instead utilize it. There’s press (“Evil Blooms”, “Too True To Be Good”), gothic haunt (“Rimbaud Eyes” – which might make Jonathan Lethem readers think of “Monster Eyes”, “Lost Boys & Girls Club”), and even some country-sway & twang (“Are You Okay?”). The group is more charming than tough (witness “In the Wake of You”), but are charming (again witness “In the Wake of You”).
Too True isn’t going to bowl anyone over, but it is enjoyable, and, more than that, shows continued growth for the Dum Dum Women.
