The second album from glitchy rockers, Holy Fuck, was recorded on the fly, and gets a shot of energy as a result. Simply titled LP, the album fills nearly every gap with a layered drum machine, occasional instrumentation, or electronic effect in a bouncing, grooved collection of tracks that fall somewhere in the realm of rocktronica. Some of the rhythms bear a resemblance to house DJs, but the band’s sound is more raw, and strips away the fluff.
While the tracks were recorded live, only the first one, "Super Inuit", was in front of an audience. Despite the strangeness of beginning an album that way, the track is well produced, and cooks up a fever with the electronic beep and drum fury. From there, LP dances around that line of motion: part ass-shaking grooves, part mind-bending effects. "Milk Shake" is percussion-heavy, with a low-tone fuzzline and distorted vocals. "Frenchy’s" takes that vibe further on the dancefloor before "Lovely Allen" walks away towards a corner couch with a refreshing adult beverage as a light-hearted, circular melody dominates. "The Pulse" is an intense jog along a fast beat, and as trees would pass by, so do reverbed glitches.
The last handful of tracks on LP have more unique feels, and finish the album on a strong, upward swing. "Royal Gregory" is straight out of a European nightclub. "Echo Sam" starts with a slick drumstick beat before giving way to a foggier psychosis. "Safari" turns up the tempo to its fastest on the album, and "Choppers" ends it on a electro-jungle grunge full of heavily-effected vocals.
Balancing the line between electronics and a rock vibe, LP is an intriguing blend of party and headphone music. It’s like a thinkpiece for your ass, and as it’s essentially recorded live, the material can surely only be stronger at a show.
