QRO’s review of Jimmy Eat World at Crystal Ballroom in Portland, OR on July 16th, 2013
For a while now, Jimmy Eat World have just been surviving. 2016’s Integrity Blues (QRO review), 2013’s Damage (QRO review), and 2010’s Invented (QRO review) were pale copies of the group’s turn-of-the-millennium emo breakout, fine for their long-time fans, but anything other than revelatory. Surviving stays in the band’s same lane, but seems to do it better, if not best.
The big, soaring emotion of back-to-back “One Mil” and “All the Way (Stay)” showcase the emo-indie that Jimmy Eat World do best, as well as the emotional rock reach of “Love Never”. Sure, there are less significant songs like the smooth “555”, and the six-plus minute hard grind closer “Congratulations” is excessive, but Surviving is a good album that reminds one of great albums.
While certainly not breaking out of their box, Jimmy Eat World have done a better job within it on Surviving.
