Larkin Poe : Self Made ManSisters Megan and Rebecca Lovell had already made their name as Larkin Poe with great country-blues records such as 2018’s Venom & Faith (QRO review), standing out in a genre where it’s hard to stand out.  Yet new album Self Made Man ups their game even more, thanks to a wry authenticity and a ton of grit.

One thing Larkin Poe do not do is back down, as exemplified by the titular opener, which puts female power behind great grit-rock, not to mention the kickin’ following “Holy Ghost Fire”.  Yes, these girls are Southern, as they make very clear with “Back Down South” (special bonus points for Little Richard reference), and they bring their roots to the fore with the working-class struggle in “Tears of Blue To Gold” & the tough life of an “Ex-Con”.  There’s sly bump-and-grind in “Keep Diggin’”, a hepstepper through tragedies on “God Moves On the Water”, and the easy-to-love homp stomp closer “Easy Street”.

Right now, Larkin Poe would have been on a great tour behind their great new record, but whenever we can head back out in all its glory, they’ll have it goin’ on.
