For about two decades, Matt Pond PA made beautiful music, before calling it quits in 2017 as main man Matt Pond retired the name. But there’s still much in the vault, and out comes a lovely selection of material in A Collection of Bees Part 1.
Collection is not some grab bag of warmed-over demos only for completists, but an album that stands on its own. Yes, two of the best songs are alternate versions of tracks off of 2013’s The Lives Inside the Lines In Your Hand (QRO review), the touching opener “Starlet” (that adds guest vocals from Anya Marina) and another great version of the excellent “Love To Get Used”. But there’s also the powerfully growing and reaching Fleetwood Mac cover, “Wild Heart”, catchy “Stopping”, relaxed smile “First Fawn”, and even two instrumentals, the carrying “The Colour Out of Space” and plucking closer “The Wrong Man”.
Hopefully Matt Pond will continue to make new music, PA or no, but in the meanwhile, A Collection of Bees Part 1 is a wonderful reminder of how sweet Matt Pond PA was.
