MiniBoone : On MiniBoone Mountain

Brooklyn’s MiniBoone have won a ton of fans (including QRO) thanks to their spastic, energetic live shows, which features leaping, shouting, instrument-switching, and more.  It is a sound, however, that can be hard to translate onto record, but debut EP Big Changes (QRO review) did so with aplomb, even if there was still some lo-fi rough-round-the-edges feel that needed to be worked out.  On the four-song On MiniBoone Mountain, their mock-big sound doesn’t exceed their prior work, but still holds up nicely.

Opener “Man/Woman” is some of MiniBoone’s best, a mock-anthem in exuberant MiniBoone style, while the following “Brand New Thing” brings in another of the band’s strengths, the group-shout.  They do overshadow the mock-fifties garage love song “Chairs Are For Lovers”, which is a little too actual fifties garage, and the stop/start size of closer “Liars + Hiders”.

At only four songs (fewer tracks than there are band members…), On MiniBoone Mountain is really more of an introduction to those who haven’t heard MiniBoone, and does that job well.  Now there will be even more people waiting in anticipation for the first MiniBoone LP.
