MisterWives : SUPERBLOOM

Electro-pop is a very hot sound right now, a sound that’s easy to be catchy, but is also often thin.  MisterWives have been trying to do more with it, like on 2017’s Connect the Dots (QRO review), while not going too far outside the box – rather, filling that box in.  New album SUPERBLOOM has songs that are both infectious and substantial, if also a few that aren’t as memorable.

At nineteen tracks (totally just over an hour), SUPERBLOOM is overstuffed.  There are excellent pieces of electro-pop such as the big uplift of “the end”, killer kiss-off to all the boys “it’s my turn”, and “I fall just to get back up” single “rock bottom” (QRO review).  “love me true” is ultra-catchy in its upbeat, while “SUPERBLOOM” (only the title track has any capitalization) is big & smooth.  Yet there are also songs that feel more standard, even run-of-the-mill electro-pop.

One can’t fault a band for having ambition, and MisterWives do live up to it.  And these days a record can be any length.  So, enjoy the stellar songs on SUPERBLOOM, and hope that one day you can hear them on the dancefloor.
