Monsters Are Waiting keep their indie-rock high and outside on Ones and Zeros EP, the band’s follow-up to 2006’s debut LP, Fascination. Like on Fascination, Monsters employ an expansive, atmospheric alternative sound, focused on the high vocals & keys of Annalee Fery and high guitars of Jonathan Siebels (Eve 6).  But sometimes the Echo Park, California group gets even bigger on Ones and Zeros EP.

Nowhere is this truer than with the titular track.  “Ones and Zeros” is an effective indie-rock encompass, with excellent guitars.  And another enchanting number follows it up, “It’s Endless”.  Square in the middle of the six-song EP, the record does slide a bit on either side of those two.  Before, “Don’t Lie” is a more restrained, pretty haunt, with some force, but starter “Crazy Love” is a little lacking in ambition in its lovely uplift.  After “Ones” & “Endless”, Monsters’ cover of The Stone Roses’ “I Wanna Be Adored” is a little too high, but given a good spin with Fery’s vocals.  However, Ones and Zeros does not finish off strong, as ender “Steal the Sun” steals some of the EP’s energy with its tweeness, stretched out over more than six minutes.

But EP’s – just a step (or not) away from singles – are judged by their strongest tracks, and Ones and Zeros has a great pair in the middle.  Unfortunately, reports are that Siebels, who didn’t join Eve 6 on their reunion tour, has also left Monsters.  At least he left on a high note…
