Patrick Watson : WaveEver since Justin Vernon became a worldwide smash hit as Bon Iver, there have been a lot of beautiful acts out there in the atmosphere. But give a minute for an artist who’s been making beautiful music for at least as long as Bon Vernon, Montreal’s Patrick Watson, and his latest beautiful piece of work, Wave.

Like prior releases, Wave is an intricate body of songs, soft and touching in their emotions, such as “The sweetest melody I ever saw,” “Melody Noir”. Many times the tracks start soft and grow into a glow, like on “The Wave”, “Broken”, “Drive”, and closer “Here Comes the River”. There’s also a definite element of charm from Watson, for instance with the enchanting opener, “Dream For Dreaming”.

Beauty in music is often hard to get a handle on, as it doesn’t grab you by the shoulders like rock ‘n’ roll or hip-hop, or get your body moving like pop or electronica. But there’s a lot to be said for just relaxing and enjoying this beautiful Wave.
