2006

British hiptronica outfit, Rubicks, is the brainchild of Vanessa Redd & Marc Makarov.  The pair, inspired by London’s underground uberstyle, created a fuzzworthy alternadance sound – rabid and quirky like a hairstyle you’d wear only to a club.  There are blossoming pop moments, but the majority of their sound is veiled in shadows, like their scene of youthful degeneration.

Their debut, In Miniature, draws a syringe from the underground party playhouses, full of fashion and fleeting energy, reminiscient of Elastica and The Bravery.  Fast-paced with "Popmobility",  the album careens around backlit corners and leather couches, youthful and unbothered.  The single, "Midas", illustrates the scene with dizzying effects and narcoleptic screams – buffered by a surreality of a childrens’ chorus.

Bursting guitars and sweaty dance-rock highlight the affair, as Redd’s vocals swoon under heavy breath and coy melodies conjure a flirty clubnight.  The recipe for a late-night jaunt and pop hangover.
