The Sea and Cake : Any Day

It’s easy to forget about The Sea and Cake. The Chicago-based group has been making music for decades now, but never had any ‘breakthrough’ or even signature single. Their music is extremely easy to listen to, but that also means that it doesn’t rock you. They haven’t released a record since 2012’s Runner (QRO review). But the group is back with Any Day, and it’s just what you remember enjoying about them in the first place.

It would be said that The Sea and Cake haven’t changed up their sound, but why would they? The ease of such Day tracks as “I Should Care” and “Circle” belie their intricate skillfulness. There is some more speed on songs like opener “Cover the Mountain” and “Day Moon”, but not enough to upset the stomach. And the brightness to “Starling” and natural instrumental “Paper Window” fits in nicely.

Any Day might not be quite as top-notch as some prior Sea and Cake releases, but that’s not really the point. What matters is that it makes you remember why you like The Sea and Cake.
