The Darkness : Hot Cakes Truth be told, The Darkness are like marmite; you either love them or can’t stand them.  But it is possible to grow to like them over time as you get round to understanding what they’re all about.  It also helps to actually go and see them live, as they are all about the showmanship with the numerous costume changes, but they definitely take their music seriously, which can be clearly seen through their performance; plus who wouldn’t want to see Justin Hawkins rocking out in a leotard!

This is the band’s third studio album; however it was recorded in the very home of Dan Hawkins in Norfolk as the band felt that their second album had been overly produced, losing its way and their originality before their five-year split.  In turn, they’ve come back with an incredibly fun-loving album, full of tracks that will get anyone up on their feet.  They’re incredibly upbeat and certainly have a special sense of humour to them that only The Darkness can pull off – which is especially seen in the track “She’s Just a Girl, Eddie”, which was written about Ed Graham’s ex-girlfriend at the time of their break up, and can be seen to encompass that fun loving attitude the band like to take towards their work; a very addictive feature.

The rest of the album follows a similar track along with the similar contextual theme of love which runs throughout the whole album, combined with Justin Hawkins exemplary vocal range, he takes charge of every single song which is still as surprising as when the first album came out and everyone was subject to his high pitched screams and wails – a talent which inspires awe.
