‘Glo-fi’ artist Jack Tatum did more with his music on sophomore Wild Nothing full-length Nocturne (QRO review), and continues to do that on Life of Pause. While the loving elements aren’t quite as remarkable as his prior effort, it’s still a shining record.
Pause opens with the tropical atmosphere of “Reichpop”, which manages to hold up in meaning as well. The synths are always center stage, for an album that stays mostly in the light & love, such as with the title track or the alien-sounding “Alien”. This does make the album a bit of a wash, overall, save for the opener and the penultimate smooth disco “Whenever I”, but it comes together well as all of the pieces are mixed together in closer “Love Underneath My Thumb”.
Life of Pause finds Tatum confident in what he’s doing and where he’s going, fuzz & shine all the way.
