Best Coast

Bethany CosentinoWith The Beach Boys reverberating around this cosy Bristol venue Best Coast took to the small stage at Thekla on Sunday, May 1st.  The Los Angeles three-piece is: Bethany Cosentino, Bobb Bruno, and former Vivian Girls (QRO album review) drummer Ali Koehler.

Cosentino fronts the band and creator of most of the bands debut album Crazy For You.  The evening delivered an immaculate performance without any trimmings that would have made this a truly Ali Koehlermemorable gig.  Not that this mattered for the sell out crowd who were packed on board this floating music venue danced around to the often-jolly West Coast summer songs.  In between songs would see Cosentino returning to her can of Cider, which waited patiently on her guitar amp.

During “Crazy For You”, the sold out crowd clapped along Bobb Brunoand a couple were seen dancing up in the small balcony, as the place started to liven up.

Cosentino spent sometime in between songs to discuss her love of Angry Birds app, which it appears she is very competent at.  She exchanged tips with a member of the audience and then the band launched into a further track from their debut album.

There were further discussions about apps.  Cosentino gave the excuse that there is a lot of time to waste on tour, and tried to explain some app that assists in dialling numbers when under the influence of alcohol?…

There were further disclosures from the lady as she confessed to being scared of boats, which was a bit of a drag as the gig was in a boat’s hull, but fortunately it rested in calm waters and was firmly moored to Bristol’s harbour.  The band introduced some new songs, which were well received by the varied mix of young and old.

The night was Best Coast’s second time in Bristol and Cosentino thanked everyone for coming out, and that Bethany Cosentinoit was a much larger audience that they were playing to this time, such has been the success of Best Coast’s debut album.

Bassist Bruno dressed in black with his long black hair, and along with Koehler on drums kept the strongly influenced ‘60s rhythm approach, sun-drenched combination going.  The songs and sound were very similar throughout but occasionally the band would rupture into a far more distorted almost, but never as mean and moody as A Place To Bury Strangers (QRO Spotlight On) psychedelic sound, which Bethany Cosentino joked might be a change of direction and the band were going to call themselves “East Coast.”

At the end of the hour-long set, Cosentino crumpled up the various set lists at the front of the stage and pitched them into the audience.  Sadly there was to be no encore, but still a proficient evening will ensure those who were here tonight will eagerly await Best Coast’s next album.
