QRO met up with Bingham Barns and Kelly Kneiser of Glossary at Mississippi Studios in Portland, Oregon on Tuesday, January 29th, to talk about touring and getting signed after over ten years together.

Formed in 1997 in Murfreesboro, TN, Glossary finally gets theirs by getting signed to a major label, Xtra Mile Recordings.  The Europeans know a good thing when they hear it!  Glossary tours Europe with their new album Long Live All of Us in March.

Bingham BarnsIt’s the first time the band has had any financial support for touring, Barns explained.  When asked about Champ Records, he joked, “Yeah, we were signed to them, but it was my own label.”

“It’ll be nice to finally get paid for what I love to do,” said Barns.  “I’d love to own a Superbassman with lovely big vacuum tubes that’s worth more than my car some day.  PGPA [Pro Gear Pro Attitude] all the way!” he joked.

Xtra Mile Recordings has this to say about Glossary:

After amassing a loyal and fervent fan base Stateside, this will be the band’s first proper release this side of the Atlantic.  Long Live… takes their influences farther than ever before, adding piano, haunting pedal steel, R&B-influenced horns and more to their own style of romanticized rock & roll.  The songs are well-intentioned narratives that emphasize the great attributes of mankind — mercy, redemption, forgiveness and second chances.

Quite simply – it blew us away and by giving this great band a home outside of North America for the first time, we’re hoping for big things.  This release looks like it could be the one to take them to new levels.

Eric GilesWith influences like Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, and Pavement, Glossary delivers a presence reminiscent of an early ‘90s genre that makes to one to stop and ask, why did I ever stop listening to solid rock?  They’re what would have might’ve happened if The Band had continued to evolve past the ‘90s.

Sandwiched between two softer bands, The Lower 48 (QRO photos) and Incredible Yacht Control, Mississippi Studios was in for a loud surprise with Barns’ supreme base lines.

Their sound conjures a cross between moonshine jam sessions and hard-hitting rock.  Eric Giles may look like Doogie Howser on drums, but he packs a hyper-focused percussion punch that’ll reverb to your core.

Kelly KneiserAfter being at it for so long, all ego has been set aside with these guys.  They’re just as happy to play to five people as to hundreds.  Kelly Kneiser joked with QRO about a little place they played, Pappy & Harriet’s in Pioneertown, California.  “You should visit, if you get the chance,” she said of the little unincorporated village in the Morongo Basin founded by Hollywood investors.  “It still looks like an 1870s frontier town.  We played in a little restaurant with families and their kids.  People were eating while we were playing.  It was kind of strange at first, but they really got into it,” laughed Kneiser.

Joey Kneiser humbly introduced Glossary, “As a band, you could describe us as, ‘What you see is what you get.’”

Between songs, Todd Beene joked, “You’re not supposed to eat five hours before you go on stage.”  An audience member shouted, “Seven.  Seven hours!”  Beene replied, well, the pre-show burger was totally worth it before he introduced “Nothing Can Keep Me Away”:

Todd Beene“This is a song for anybody who’s ever wanted to be in a rock and roll band or lays awake at night thinking, ‘someday…’”

After the soft, country-tinged lullaby of “Nothing Can Keep Me Away”, Joey Kneiser introduced “Trouble Won’t Last Always” – “This is the ass shakin’ part of the set.  We come from the South where people like to dance, so I want to see you shake it!” he said, before launching into an energetic performance of “Trouble Won’t Last Always”.

After “Trouble Won’t Last Always”, Joey Kneiser announced to a disappointed Tennessee crowd, “This is our last song of the night!”  “Save Your Money for the Weekend” commands you to take your woman out on a crisp September night for dancing and milkshakes at the drive in.

Glossary is, “What you see is what you get,” and that is full of southern charm, hospitality and good ‘ole rock & roll.  They offer free music on their website: glossary.us.
