Julie DoironCanadian singer/songwriter Julie Doiron rocked the stage at the Music Box Theatre in Los Angeles, CA, on Monday, May 3rd.  Her early albums were quiet and soft-spoken, but Doiron has come a long way since those days.  Her stage presence on Monday was anything but shy, as her energy & sound were charismatic & charming, with a dramatic flair.

Julie DoironDoiron mostly performed songs from her newest album, last year’s I Can Wonder What You Did with Your Day.  Through this album she tells stories about her past relationships and where she is today, but takes things up a few notches with heavy electric guitar riffs.  She explodes from the inside, and passionately throws every bit of her sentiment to the crowd.  Thankfully, she spared the crowd from the quiet, singing-in-bed-with-a-teddy-bear whispered tone.  That’s the type of sound you’d hear in her 1997 album, Loneliest in the Morning.  Doiron’s voice, reminiscent of Leslie Feist (QRO live review), got breathy and sexy as she strove to reach higher notes.  Her excess strings for her guitar were not trimmed and jumbled.  It kind of represented her personality on stage, a little rough around the edges, but in perfect pitch.

Julie Doiron & Will KidmanIn the midst of her set, Doiron and her drummer, Will Kidman, sang to each other and harmonized the lyrics, “Love is like a cloud / It holds a lot of rain.”  They slowly and softly sang into the same mic just like Johnny Cash and June Carter would have, pouring their hearts out.

Doiron had the pleasure of opening up for fellow Canadians Broken Social Scene (QRO photos) and was a perfect fit for the job.
