Sleigh Bells : Live

Derek MillerSummer in New York means an endless supply of free concerts, and Converse obliged us on Saturday, July 21st, by presenting Sleigh Bells at Pier 63 at Hudson River Park.  Two albums in, Alexis Krauss (vocals) and Derek Miller (guitars) know how to put on a show and make it look good.

Krauss’ breathy voice is a little strained in a live setting, but she has the attitude and power needed to pull off a live show.  Onstage, she is constantly in motion as she delivers her sugar-sweet-and-sinister vocals.  In front of Marshall stacks and smoke machines running non-stop, the duo presents itself like a myth of the ‘80s, but is firmly a product of the present.

Not every artist is meant for an outdoor setting, but Sleigh Bells’ blown-out guitars fit the bill.  On a summer Saturday night, loudness is a virtue, and fun should be taken seriously.

Sleigh Bells’ Reign of Terror is out now (QRO review).
