Taking Chance : Live
Taking Chances

Portishead is a coastal town some ten miles from Bristol, but yet this sleepy corner of the west of the UK has spawned artists such as trip hop giants Portishead (QRO photos), punk band Chaos UK, and even The Wurzels’ Adge Cutler.

Taking ChancesThe latest creation to evolve from this town is Taking Chances, a trio who met at school in the latter part of last year.  Having only played a couple of gigs, it was a big deal for the 14-year-olds to be playing The Bristol Fleece on Thursday, October 19th, as frontman Sam Hughes would proclaim afterwards his joy of playing on the same stage as Billy Clyro (QRO photos), Muse (QRO album review), The Darkness, and Amy Winehouse.

It was a miracle in itself that Taking Chances had even managed to take to the stage in a week that had seen the bass player relieved of his duties and the regular drummer Justin Wilkinson have to pull out due to a wrist injury.

The band moved swiftly to recruit Alex Bennett from another Portishead band, heavy metal group Terminal Moraine.

Throughout the evening Taking Chances blitzed along with their buzz pop punk sound, which drew upon some unmistakable influences of artists such as Green Day (QRO album review) and Blink-182 (QRO album review).

The band produced a blistering half hour set which saw lead vocalist guitarbass player Sam ‘Squirrel’ Hughes break a string on his guitar after just one song, much to his delight!  The band was guided along brilliantly by accomplished guitar work by Tim Brown, who coolly kept control of the evenings proceedings.  Drummer Bennett, looking very un-heavy metal, decked out in pink jeans, stepped into the breach as though he had been with the band since its inception.  Only now and again, dropping in some more heavy beats more akin to Terminal Moraine.

The set list delivered several of their own numbers in “Anthem”, “Hearts In Two” and “Kill Joy” which saw those in the audience leaping around until the final number and an exhilarating Alex Bennett drum solo.  Taking Chances will be playing further gigs around the West Country and will soon be releasing a full version of “Skip a Beat”.
