Here came the blonde Purdy/Andy Warhol, a cheeky grin as he clapped his hands.  Tim Burgess’ persona lights up The Apollo in Manchester on Friday, June 1st, along with, well, the lights!  The two tier hall, with its sloping floor, built in the ‘30s as a cinema and opened by Margaret Lockwood, the balcony hanging over the standing sloping ground floor.

Following the support The Deadbeat Echoes (QRO photos), the atmosphere already stirred up, plastic pints held in the hands of excited thirty-plus-ers.  The enthusiasm built as the songs, one after another were played.

Tim Burgess“How Can You Leave Us” with gestures to the mouth, a twirling couple of fingers coming up to, “…I could give you mouth to mouth.”  “The Only One I Know” brought with it full audience participation with dancing from the ‘90s…  The Charlatans being like the water from the film Cocoon; you could tell there were people that hadn’t danced since then – aching limbs in the morning – but that night it was sweaty Fred Perry tops and hair stuck to foreheads, matched with big panting grins.

Tim Burgess“Title Fight” cast Burgess in Neon, lit up like a black-light performance.  Before “Forever”, Burgess said, “It’s good to be back again” to the obvious appreciation of the hall.  There were hats, wigs, and the pounding of chests; Stephen Holt of The Inspiral Carpets (QRO live review) was seen singing along.

Great evening, great band, simples!
