The Tedeschi Trucks Band Wheels Of Soul Tour rolled into Boca Raton’s Mizner Park Amphitheater on Saturday, June 29th. This night, the second stop of the 2019 tour, featured a redesigned set, a new keyboardist, unexpected covers, and a guest appearance.
The 2019 version of Tedeschi Trucks’ Wheels Of Soul tour features opening acts Shovels & Rope, a Charleston, SC based husband and wife duo, and Blackberry Smoke, the Charlie Starr fronted rock band from Atlanta. Shovels & Rope played a 45 minute long set of country inspired rock with, at times, a punk edge. The duo changed up their instruments often, switching between drums, piano, and harmonica. Blackberry Smoke fans were out in force to support their band as they jammed through an hour plus set of Southern blues-rock.

The Tedeschi Trucks set featured their usual blend of jam-filled blend of soul and rock, with the always popular covers thrown in. On this night the covers included those of Santana, Leon Russell, and Blind Willie McTelll, among others. The surprise covers of the night were Elton John’s “Border Song”, new to this tour, with Susan Tedeschi admirably handling the vocal duties, and a cover of the Leon Russell track “Stranger In a Strange Land”, also new to this tour, with Charlie Starr joining the twelve-piece outfit to help out on vocals.
The TTB setlist also featured tracks from Signs, their latest release, including set opener “Signs (High Times)”, “When Will I Begin”, and “I Want More”. The remainder of the 16 song set featured older songs and covers.
Also of note on this tour is the new stage layout which featured the keys moving back and up, putting them in a more prominent spot for new keyboardist Gabe Dixon who is filling in for the late Kofi Burbridge.
