Indie-rock artist Ryan Santiago, known as Royal & The Serpent, visited L’Olympia in Montreal, Canada for the first-time on Sunday, October 17th, opening for Demi Lovato on her HOLY FVCK Tour.

At the start of the show, the lights dimmed and Royal & The Serpents emerged from the side of the stage waving to the crowd. She picked up her guitar and started playing “I Can’t Get High” from her second EP Searching For Nirvana. Most of the show saw Royal & The Serpent going in hard, performing while jumping around and lying on the floor. Her high energy got the crowd hooked up instantly as they join her clapping their hands to the beat of the songs. Santiago also treated the crowd to new music, two new songs that have yet to be released and her latest singles “IM FINE” and “Death Of Me”. She showed how incredible of a drummer she is, playing a solo during one of her unreleased songs.

Her 40 minutes set ended with “Overwhelmed” which went viral on TikTok about a year ago and launched Royal & The Serpent into the outer reaches of the indie-rock mainstream. Standing up on a box with strobes of green lights and accompanied by the whole crowd, she Sun, “I get overwhelmed so easily / My anxiety creeps inside of me / Makes it hard to breathe / What’s come over me? / Feels like I’m somebody else”.

Santiago played a fantastic, high-energy set that was chock full of great tunes. When we all thought her performance was over, Royal & The Serpents came back on stage one last time to perform her collaboration with Demi Lovato “EAT ME”, a high-energy rock anthem which got the whole crowd screaming the lyrics back at them.
