Shaky Knees 2016 Preview

Atlanta’s Shaky Knees Festival has grown in a few short years into a can’t-miss event. Go down to Georgia, Friday-Sunday, May 13th-15th:

FRIDAY, MAY 13th

Peachtree Stage

Jane’s Addiction, 9:30 PM – 11:00 PM

One of the first bands to emerge from the early nineties alternative music scene, you knew Jane’s Addiction’s break-up right at their height of popularity in 1991 would never knew last. They’ve since reunited not once, not twice, but thrice! Starting in 2008, all four original members got back together for the first time since the first break-up, joining Nine Inch Nails on the ‘NIN/JA’ tour (QRO photos outdoors), playing the classics. Admittedly 2011’s new The Great Escape Artist was not that great (which is why bassist Eric Avery left before it was made), but the classics still are, and they come out in force at their live shows (QRO live review), with the band’s gaudy, extreme, alt-sexual antics (QRO photos). Oh, and singer/frontman Perry Farrell basically invented the alternative music festival with his original Lollapalooza (QRO 2015 recap), so you know they know how to do a festival right (QRO photos from a festival)…
Jane's Addiction
Bloc Party, 7:15 PM – 8:15 PM

Known for their ubiquitous single, “Banquet”, Bloc Party (QRO photos at a festival) is one of the few gems to come out of the post-punk revival in the early 2000’s. The four-piece band (QRO photos) has become a household name within the U.K. region, and gaining fans in America (QRO photos) and elsewhere (QRO photos at a festival). They (QRO photos at a festival) come to Shaky Knees (QRO photos at a festival) behind this year’s Hymns (QRO review), their best since debut Silent Alarm.
Bloc Party
Cold War Kids, 5:15 PM – 6:15 PM

After a string of EPs, Fullerton, California’s Cold War Kids (QRO photos) blew up in 2006 with their full-length debut, Robbers & Cowards. While 2008’s Loyalty to Loyalty (QRO review) suffered something of a sophomore slump, 2011’s Mine Is Yours (QRO review) 2013’s Miss Lonelyhearts (QRO review), and 2014’s Hold My Home (QRO review), lifted things somewhat, and their live show (QRO live review) is still electric, especially outside (QRO live review outdoors) or at festivals (QRO photos at a festival), as they still ring with singles (QRO photos), from the more recent “Mine Is Yours” and “Audience” (QRO video) to their break-outs “We Used To Vacation”, “Hospital Beds” (QRO video), and “Hang Me Out To Dry” (QRO video). They play Shaky Knees for the second time in three years.
Cold War Kids
Wolf Alice, 3:15 PM – 4:15 PM

North London’s Wolf Alice (QRO live review) may have debuted in 2013 with single “Fluffy”, but they’re anything but, as they come to Shaky Knees (QRO live review).

Ponce de Leon Stage

Slowdive, 8:15 PM – 9:30 PM

Shoegaze was always at its biggest in Britain in acts like My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive (QRO photos at a festival), whose members spun off into various other projects in the nineties (including Mojave 3 – QRO photos), but started a reunion on 2014 (QRO live review).
Slowdive
Savages, 6:15 PM – 7:15 PM

2013 saw London quartet Savages (QRO photos) break out in a major way with Silence Yourself (QRO review). They come to Shaky Knees (QRO photos at a festival) ready to deliver their thrilling live experience of post-punk and noise, behind this year’s Adore Life (QRO review).
Savages
Crystal Fighters, 4:15 PM – 5:15 PM

From Navarre in Spain comes Crystal Fighters (QRO live review), who mixed electronic with Basque traditional (QRO live review).
Crystal Fighters
Brian Fallon, 2:30 PM – 3:15 PM

Frontman for New Jersey’s excellent Gaslight Anthem (QRO live review), Brian Fallon (QRO photos at a festival) plays Shaky Knees solo.

Boulevard Stage

The Kills, 8:15 PM – 9:30 PM

Before garage-rock blew up in the States, Britain was at the center of a neo-garage/blues boom all its own – and one of the best was duo The Kills (QRO photos at a festival) and Midnight Boom. Rock frontlady extraordinaire Allison ‘VV’ Mosshart (QRO art exhibit photos) took some time off from partner Jamie ‘Hotel’ Hince (QRO photo exhibit review) after Midnight to pair up with that guy from that other male-female neo-garage/blues ‘The’ duo, Jack White, as The Dead Weather (QRO album review). But The Kills returned in 2011 (QRO photos at a festival) with Blood Pressures (QRO review) & songs like “You Don’t Own the Road” (QRO video), and still had the killer live show (QRO live review), especially outdoors (QRO live review outdoors). Now, after another Dead Weather record (QRO review), Hince & Mosshart are back (QRO live review) in the run-up to June’s release of Ash & Ice, with a grinding & charming live show (QRO live review).
The Kills
The Struts, 6:15 PM – 7:15 PM

Everything old is new again, so embrace the unabashed glam classic-rock revival of The Struts, who come to Shaky Knees behind debut Everybody Wants.
The Struts
The Sword, 4:15 PM – 5:15 PM

Bringing the metal is Austin’s own The Sword (QRO live review). The heavy metal band has previously opened for the likes of Metallica (QRO photos on tour with The Sword) and Motörhead (QRO photos), but can more than hold their own (QRO live review). They come to Shaky Knees behind last year’s High Country, so watch out (QRO live review)!

Piedmont Stage

The 1975, 9:30 PM – 11:00 PM

Manchester’s The 1975 (QRO photos at a festival) turned heads with their Sex EP in 2012, even though it wasn’t very good (QRO review), they have kept that up as the second coming of INXS with this year’s I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It (isn’t that the name of a One Direction song?…).
The 1975
Ghost, 7:15 PM – 8:15 PM

Even though they’ve had to go by ‘Ghost B.C.’ in the States, there’s only one Ghost (QRO photos). The Swedish heavy metal band is famous for their on-stage presence: five of the six members wear hooded robes, while the singer is a cardinal with a skull face. They’re also super-secretive about their identities (“Papa Emeritus” and the “Nameless Ghouls”). So get freaked out like only the Swedes can make you, as the band returns to Shaky Knees (QRO photos).
Ghost
Against Me!, 5:15 PM – 6:15 PM

Northern Florida’s given the world a lot of punk, some of it good, some of it not so much, but on the more positive side is Against Me! (QRO photos). Fronted by Tom Gabel (QRO interview), Against Me! (QRO photos) successfully made the jump to major label without losing their edge on 2010’s White Crosses (QRO review). They did make major news in 2012 when Gabel announced that he was transgender, and undergoing the process of transition to becoming a woman, Laura Jane Grace. Yet the group (QRO spotlight on – which also left the majors and started their own label for that year’s Transgender Dysphoria Blues QRO review) has continued to rock (QRO photos), and come to Shaky Knees (QRO photos at a festival).
Against Me!
Baroness, 3:15 PM – 4:15 PM

2012 was the best year and the worst year for Savannah’s Baroness (QRO live review). The metal group put themselves at the forefront of today’s metal renaissance with the highly acclaimed Yellow & Green (QRO review) – only for tragedy to strike in the form of a terrible bus accident in England. No lives were lost, but drummer Allen Blickle and bassist Matt Maggioni had to quit the band due to their injuries. Thankfully, replacements have been found and Baroness are back on the road (QRO photos).
Baroness
Craig Finn, 1:45 PM – 2:30 PM

Exuberant frontman of The Hold Steady (QRO live review), Craig Finn (QRO photos) comes solo to Shaky Knees behind last year’s solo record, Faith in the Future.

SATURDAY, MAY 14th

Peachtree Stage

My Morning Jacket, 9:00 PM – 11:00 PM

The current alt-country wave has lifted the boats of bands that had already been doing it for a long time, such Wilco (QRO live review) and My Morning Jacket (QRO live review). The Louisville outfit, fronted by singer/guitarist Jim James, doesn’t have to just play it sweet, but also keep the rock. They reached the bigger time with 2008’s Evil Urges (QRO review) and 2011’s Circuital (QRO review), but are still growing – even had a whole episode of American Dad about/with them (okay, not Family Guy, but still…). Having already hit the big time (QRO photos outdoors), they can definitely handle headlining Shaky Knees (QRO photos headlining a festival), which they come to after last year’s release of their latest, The Waterfall.
My Morning Jacket
Huey Lewis & The News, 6:45 PM – 7:45 PM

Huey Lewis has been making popular music since before most millennials were born. Hell, their huge break was “The Power of Love” in Back To the Future! He & The News have also had such hits as “I Want a New Drug”, name-checking-every-city “The Heart of Rock & Roll”, “Hip To Be Square”, and more. You know you will be singing along, so don’t even try to fight it…
Huey Lewis & The News
Deer Tick, 4:45 PM – 5:45 PM

The dirty side of alt-country garage-rock comes back to Shaky Knees in the form of Deer Tick (QRO photos outdoors), who’ve been rockin’ bigger & bigger stages (QRO photos) and wilder & wilder shows (QRO live review) since the release of their latest, 2011’s Divine Providence (QRO review) and 2013’s Negativity.
Deer Tick
JJ Grey & Mofro, 2:45 PM – 3:45 PM

A mix of nearly every strain of American music, JJ Grey & Mofro take blues, rock, soul, funk, and much more into a jam festival favorite.
JJ Grey & Mofro
Strand of Oaks, 1:15 PM – 2:00 PM

For those looking for something a bit more heavy, look no further than Strand of Oaks (QRO photos at a festival). Timothy Showalter is not afraid to be honest in his guitar-driven songs punctuated with soaring solos. There’s a touch of pop, some Neil Young and the cathartic release of Strand of Oaks (QRO photos at a festival) will have you feeling nostalgic and ready for the future all at the same time.

Strand of Oaks

Ponce de Leon Stage

The Decemberists, 7:45 PM – 9:00 PM

Portland, Oregon’s The Decemberists (QRO photos at a festival) have been booming in recent years, from their showdown with Stephen Colbert on The Colbert Report (QRO Music on Late Night TV) to 2009’s excellent magnum opus, The Hazards of Love (QRO review), 2011’s The King Is Dead (QRO review), which earned them a Grammy nom, and last year’s What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World. Oh, and they taught the children of Springfield Elementary on The Simpsons, plus appeared on the season finale of Parks & Recreation!
The Decemberists
Phosphorescent, 5:45 PM – 6:45 PM

Alt-country/indie-folk has been booming, especially on the festival circuit, so there’s gonna be a slot for Athens, Georgia-by-way-of-Brooklyn, NY (QRO photos outdoors at a festival in Brooklyn) Phosphorescent (QRO photos outdoors). After playing Europe (QRO European tour review) & America in 2013 behind the Muchacho, they’re less jam & more touch than their contemporaries, and love to play outdoors (QRO photos outdoors) and at festivals (QRO photos at a festival).
Phosphorescent
Shakey Graves, 3:45 PM – 4:45 PM

Shakey Graves (QRO photos at a festival) is the post-folk alter ego of Austin’s Alejandro Rose-Garcia (QRO photos), who come to Shaky Knees with an extra ‘e’.
Shakey Graves
Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors, 2:00 PM – 2:45 PM

Tennessee’s Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors (QRO photos at a festival) brings the Americana rock of last year’s Medicine to Shaky Knees.
Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors
Son Little, 12:30 PM – 1:15 PM

Catch the angular blues of Son Little (QRO photos).

Songs For Kids, 11:45 AM – 12:15 PM

Son Little

Boulevard Stage

Foals, 8:15 PM – 9:30 PM

Oxford, England’s Foals (QRO photos) still haven’t quite shaken off the backhanded compliment label of ‘internet buzz band’, even with 2010’s well-received sophomore release Total Life Forever (QRO review) or 2013’s follow-up Holy Fire, but you should really see & judge for yourself (QRO live review) as they come back to Shaky Knees on tour (QRO photos) behind last year’s What Went Down (QRO review).
 Foals
The Vaccines, 6:15 PM – 7:15 PM

The Vaccines (QRO live review) have grown up (somewhat) with 2012’s Come of Age (QRO review) and last year’s English Graffiti, with their garage rock maybe finally earning some all the attention they got (QRO photos at a festival) from debut What Did You Expect From The Vaccines? (QRO review).
The Vaccines
The Dear Hunter, 4:15 PM – 5:15 PM

Providence’s The Dear Hunter (QRO photos) use a wide range instruments in their experimental post-hardcore style (QRO photos), as they return to Riot Fest for the second time in three years, behind last year’s Act IV: Rebirth In Reprise.

Piedmont Stage

Walk the Moon, 9:30 PM – 11:00 PM

In their self-titled album, Walk the Moon (QRO review), these Ohio natives (QRO live review) became one of America’s infectious indie rock groups (QRO photos at a festival) and it’s easy to see why: their catchy guitar riffs, fun and creamy pop beats can strike a tune within any listener (QRO photos at a festival). In 2012, the band (QRO photos) had the ‘song of the summer’ in “Anna Sun”, but they’re more than just that great single (QRO photos), and come to Shaky Knees (QRO photos at a festival) behind 2014’s follow-up full-length, Talking Is Hard (QRO review). Shut up and dance with me!
Walk the Moon
Silversun Pickups, 7:15 PM – 8:15 PM

In 2006, Los Angeles’ Echo Lake music scene blew up in a big way – all thanks to Silversun Pickups (QRO photos) & Carnavas. In 2009, they finally followed that up with Swoon (QRO review), which charted even higher – and they (QRO live review) come to the festival circuit (QRO photos at a festival) and Shaky Knees (QRO photos outdoors) behind 2013’s Neck of the Woods (QRO review) and last year’s Better Nature (QRO review).
Silversun Pickups
Wild Nothing, 5:15 PM – 6:15 PM

Sun-soaked, fuzzy, dream pop that should go well with a sun-soaked festival. Wild Nothing (QRO live review) is Jack Tatum’s wonderful solo project (QRO live review), and with Nocturne (QRO review) and this year’s Life of Pause (QRO review), the follow-up to his wonderful first album Gemini (QRO album review), there’s sure to be plenty of new music afoot (QRO photos at a festival).

SUNDAY, MAY 15th

Peachtree Stage

Florence & The Machine, 8:30 PM – 10:00 PM

Known for her yearning vocals and crooning howls (QRO photos), Florence & The Machine (QRO live review) have garnered the reputation of the world’s most renowned indie pop artists (QRO photos). However, their singles “Shake It Out” and “You’ve Got The Love” from 2011’s Ceremonials (QRO review) were only a short glimpse of her haunting soundscape (QRO photos). The group (QRO live review) will come to Shaky Knees (QRO photos at a festival) after last year’s release of follow-up How Big How Blue How Beautiful (QRO review).
Florence & The Machine
The Head and The Heart, 6:15 PM – 7:15 PM

Fairly recently, things have been seriously booming for The Head and The Heart (QRO live review). The Seattle alt-folk/pop band (QRO photos outdoors) was signed by Sub Pop (QRO photos outdoors), named their city’s best new band by Seattle Weekly, opened for everybody from Dave Matthews (QRO live review) to Death Cab for Cutie (QRO album review). They’ve since graduated to headlining status (QRO live review) behind 2013’s sweet Let’s Be Still (QRO review) – though their crowds won’t (QRO photos at a festival).
The Head and The Heart
St. Paul & The Broken Bones, 4:15 PM – 5:15 PM

From Birmingham, Alabama, St. Paul & The Broken Bones (QRO photos at a festival) bring the true southern soul.
St. Paul & The Broken Bones
Frightened Rabbit, 2:15 PM – 3:15 PM

Scotland’s Frightened Rabbit (QRO live review) are at the forefront of the tragic, heartfelt wave coming from England’s neighbor to the north, most recently with this year’s Painting of a Heart Attack, 2013’s Pedestrian Verse (QRO review) and 2010’s The Winter of Mixed Drinks (QRO review). They also really put themselves out there on record, but their live show (QRO photos at a festival) also sees them joking (QRO photos), in their Scottish brogue, capture on 2009’s live album, Liver! Lung! FR! (QRO review). Also a strong festival band, they can even take requests (QRO live review of all-request show).

Also:

Ponce de Leon Stage

Young the Giant, 7:15 PM – 8:30 PM

These Irvine natives toiled for years as The Jakes, but when they changed their name to Young the Giant (QRO photos at a festival), things finally took off (QRO photos at a festival), with their self-(new) titled album & TV performances, including at MTV’s Video Music Awards. They’ve since been gracing bigger (QRO photos) and bigger (QRO photos) stages & shows (QRO live review), including festivals (QRO photos at a festival) like Shaky Knees. YtG (QRO photos) come to in the run-up to August’s Home of the Strange, following 2014’s Mind over Matter (QRO review).
Young the Giant
Houndmouth, 5:15 PM – 6:15 PM

From somewhere others consider nowhere, New Albany, Indiana, Houndmouth (QRO photos in Middle America) have managed to make it by working the Americana rock road. They play Shaky Knees for the second time in three years.
Houndmouth
Unknown Mortal Orchestra, 3:15 PM – 4:15 PM

From Portland (QRO photos in Portland), but also New Zealand, Unknown Mortal Orchestra (QRO live review) impressed a lot of ears with their self-titled debut (QRO review) and last year’s Multi Love, both of which managed to be avant while also still rockin’ (QRO photos at a festival).
Unknown Mortal Orchestra
Atlas Genius, 1:30 PM – 2:15 PM

From Adelaide down under in Australia comes Atlas Genius (QRO photos). Singer/guitarist Keith Jeffrey, backed by brothers Michael & Steven (QRO photos), made indie-waves even before debut When It Was Now (QRO review) came out, and have been serious road warriors (QRO photos). They come to Shaky Knees touring off of last year’s Inanimate Objects.

Boulevard Stage

Explosions In the Sky, 7:15 PM – 8:30 PM

There might not be a more important or beloved post-rock band that Explosions In the Sky (QRO photos at a festival). The Austin band (QRO photos at an Austin festival) basically introduced the epic, vocal-less concept that is ‘post-rock’ (QRO photos outdoors) into both the indie-sphere (QRO photos at a festival) and the wider world (QRO photos at a European festival) – and providing the theme song to Friday Night Lights – (QRO soundtrack review). They even made the Top Twenty on the Billboard charts with 2011’s Take Care, Take Care, Take Care (QRO review), and come to Shaky Knees behind the follow-up, this year’s The Wilderness.
Explosions In the Sky
The Black Angels, 5:15 PM – 6:15 PM

Austin’s great music scene has many dimensions, but the band that opened up the psychedelic side of the Live Music Capitol of the World is The Black Angels (QRO spotlight on). The group (QRO photos), fronted by Alex Mass (QRO interview), bring the psych-rock of 2013’s Indigo Meadow (QRO review) and 2010’s Phosphene Dream (QRO review) back to Shaky Knees (QRO photos outdoors at a festival), after previously playing America (QRO live review) & Europe (QRO photos at a European festival), not to mention their own Austin psych fest, Levitation (QRO photos at Levitation ’15).
The Black Angels
Parquet Courts, 3:15 PM – 4:15 PM

Bringing grunge back has been the active Parquet Courts (QRO photos at a festival), who come to Shaky Knees off of this year’s Human Performance.
Parquet Courts
Murder By Death, 1:30 PM – 2:15 PM

Murder By Death (QRO photos) have kept it up well since emerging out of college town Bloomington, Indiana. They’ve got a loyal fan base who will be out in force, while the band mixes between older material and tracks from last year’s Big Dark Love, 2012’s Bitter Drink, Bitter Moon, and 2010’s Good Morning, Magpie (QRO review). They play Shaky Knees for a second time.
Murder by Death
Caveman, 12:00 PM – 12:45 PM

Caveman (QRO photos at a festival) emerged out of one-half of the tricky to pigeonhole Subjects (QRO spotlight on) with last year’s similarly tough to categorize CoCo Beware (QRO review), but settled down into an interesting haunt with 2013’s self-titled follow-up (QRO review). They come to Shaky Knees in the run-up to the June release of Otero War.

Caveman

Piedmont Stage

At the Drive-In, 8:30 PM – 10:00 PM

Important, influential, and successful, At the Drive-In was everything one could want in the post-hardcore band in the nineties, so of course they broke up, with Cedric Bixler and Omar Rodriguez forming The Mars Volta (QRO album review), and Paul Hinojos, Tony Hajjar, and Jim Ward making Sparta. A one-off reunion in 2012 proved to be just that, a one-off, but now they’re back together for a full tour – though without Ward.
At the Drive-In
Deftones, 6:15 PM – 7:15 PM

Alternative metal doesn’t come much better than the Deftones (QRO live review). The Sacramento has been act elevating the often-derided style for over two decades now, most recently with 2012’s Koi No Yokan (QRO review) and this year’s Gore. They’re also mainstays on the rock festival circuit (QRO photos at a festival). They (QRO live review) are known for being the rare band that both head-bangers and hipsters like, so come see why (QRO photos at a festival).
Deftones
Eagles of Death Metal, 4:15 PM – 5:15 PM

Not a death metal act but a sort of cross between the genre and the Eagles, Eagles of Death Metal (QRO photos) are formed around Jesse Hughes and Josh Homme, though the latter rarely performs live thanks to his commitments to acts like Queens of the Stone Age.

Last November these Eagles (QRO photos at a festival) became famous in the most tragic of ways, as their set at Le Bataclan in Paris was one of the sites of the terrorist attacks in that city. But now this band soars even higher.
Eagles of Death Metal
The Orwells, 2:15 PM – 3:15 PM

Illinois’ The Orwells (QRO photos at a festival) graduated from high school early to pursue their rock ‘n’ roll dreams, and started living up to them with 2013’s debut Remember When. They play Shaky Knees for a second time.
