Alt-country/folk troubadour ensembles have gotten very popular these days, from Mumford & Sons to Iceland’s Of Monsters and Men to The Lumineers, who broke through in 2012 with their self-titled debut. Now finally comes the follow-up, Cleopatra, which definitely stays in The Lumineers’ wheelhouse, and will certainly be enjoyed by their wide fan base.
Cleopatra has the intimate indie-folk mix of sadness and uplift, from the building ‘up with life’ “Sleep On the Floor” and “Gun Song” to the stripped down end-of-life-in-a-hospital “Long Way From Home”. There are lovely hep-steppers, “Ophelia” and the title track, while piano takes center stage on the final two pieces, “My Eyes” and instrumental “Patience”.
There is some evolution from the debut, if only being less wide-eyed and little wiser. But The Lumineers keeps their audience satisfied.
