The Vaselines : Live

The Vaselines from Glasgow played some garage pop and told some raunchy jokes about Portland and Portlanders on a foggy Sunday night at the underground Doug Fir Lounge on January 25th.

The room was steamy after Portland darlings Loch Lomond warmed up the stage.  The Vaselines then took the stage and the room reverberated with their loud, maybe too loud for the tiny Doug Fir, Ramones-inspired songs from V for Vaselines (QRO review).

Frances McKee joked about the lack of sex she was having on tour, poking fun of her band mates and how good looking and polite Portlanders were. “Not a good thing,” McKee said.  She suggested that the Portland opening band Loch Lomond ought to pronounce their name properly if they were going to name it after the Scottish lake, before inviting a couple of them up on stage to play bike horns on “Molly’s Lips”.

There were hoots and hollers and dancing especially when The Vaselines added a little country twang to “Jesus Don’t Want Me For a Sunbeam” that Kurt Cobain covered on MTV Unplugged (QRO DVD review).

After 25 years, these rockers are still bringing it.
