The holidays can be light on new music, from less touring to fewer studio releases (labels are focused on box sets & Christmas releases for the shopping season). While it’s a poor time to put out a new full-length, it’s a great time for a new bonus EP, like The Wombats’ Is This What It Feels Like To Feel Like This?.
Recorded shortly after this year’s Fix Yourself, Not the World (QRO review), Is This continues The Wombats’ emotional dance party, reflecting both the highs of the disco and the lows of afterwards. That dichotomy comes out clearest in the demon drink of “Demon”, paired nicely with the excitement of the following title track. They can be wry like on the opening “I Think My Mind Has Made Its Mind Up” (you can also tell they’ve got some emo by their long song titles…), but also the dark evening after the party in closer “Good Idea At the Time”.
At just six songs, Is This What It Feels Like To Feel Like This? is only a bit longer than its title, but enough for a cohesive release of its own to add to your holiday cheer (and/or blues).
