A new season breaks as The Great Outdoors release the first of four EPs scheduled for this year, Spring. Singer/songwriter Adam Nation forged his folk-rock act The Great Outdoors with last year’s full-length, Food, Booze, and Entertainment, but now goes a step farther, with the four EPs planned in 2008, one for each season of the year.  And The Great Outdoors comes in like a lion with Spring EP.

The EP opens with the alt-country, down-home appeal of “Spring Flower”.  Reminiscent of the southern country-rock of My Morning Jacket or Kings of Leon, The Great Outdoors shows off a relaxed, natural charm, at ease with their surroundings.  Things get darker and more ‘epic’ in style with “Suzy’s Song”, though the profound, grand track comes off a little slow.  Spring ends with “So Long Old Man”, which combines a higher, more ‘nature’-wise folk-rock to a driving undertone, in order to give it some extra heft.

At only three songs, Spring is on the short side, even for an EP.  But isn’t that always the way with spring: the minute you realize the flowers are out and the rains are refreshing, not biting, the blooms are wilting under the unbroken heat of the summer sun.  But now we’ve got something to look forward to: Summer EP.
