The Noisettes live on the sharper edge of the latest version of the punk movement.  With a heavy sound and Shingai Shoniwa's jagged vocals, they're carving their distinct place into the crowded scene.   But not only can they rock with gravity, they can mix up the sound to throw a meaningful party, like a punk equivalent of a Baptist revival.  There's something deeper than usual in their debut album, What's The Time Mr Wolf?

From the gutter-tastic riff of "Don't Give Up" to the eight-minute "Heirarchy", The Noisettes cover a relatively wide range of sounds for a punk three-piece.  "Scratch Your Name" has a tom-driven beat with a spiky vocals including a refrain that evokes a '70s rock hit.  "The Count of Monte Christo" is a greyhound-speed acoustic spin, while "Cannot Even (Break Free)" is a calm, but metallic ballad that occasionally erupts into a headbanger.  Most of What's The Time Mr Wolf? is a variation of their erratic, yet complex style of punk.

The strongest parts of the band are Shoniwa's attention-commanding vocals and Smith's violently active guitars that don't aim to kill, just draw blood.  Quick tempos, echoed refrains, and an excellent mix of punk, glam, and high volume rock make What's The Time Mr Wolf? nearly irresistable.  A promising debut from a highly-talented group that teach an old genre new tricks.
