The So So Glos : Lower Back Chain Shift EP

Even in the overstocked Brooklyn garage-rock scene, The So So Glos are particularly beloved. They & DIY concert impresario Todd P opened the DIY hot-spot Market Hotel (currently closed due to da guberment), and the band turned their rehearsal space into the new DIY show space, Shea Stadium (QRO venue review). They’ve opened on tour for DIY locals-made-big Matt & Kim (QRO live review together) and, most recently, they played all five boroughs in five days coming out of CMJ (QRO recap). And their Lower Back Chain Shift EP remains a cut above your usual Brooklyn garage-rock.

A garage-gallop opens Shift in “Fred Astaire” and closes it with “Lindy Hop” – there’s not a wild amount of variety on the five-song EP, but The So So Glos’ garage-gallop is certainly enjoyable.  “Live Like TV” is bit run-of-the-mill, but the stripped and quiet “New Stance” has some evocative power, and the upbeat rhythm to “Here Comes the Neighborhood” proves that the most valuable member in the three-brother trio isn’t singer/bassist Alex Levine or guitarist Ryan Levine, but stepbrother Zach Staggers on drums.

With their last full-length out in 2008, it’s high time The So So Glos put out another (garage-rock is known for its quick turnover time in production), but all the performing & venue-ing has kept the band out of the studio (and their complete borough coverage was beaten by Mugison – QRO spotlight on – who did it in one day – QRO photos), so Lower Back Chain Shift will keep their Brooklyn DIY fans for now.
