Los Angeles’ Warpaint have long felt like a multi-headed beast, with different members taking lead on any given song. That’s given them a wide variety and definite surprise, but also a relative lack of focus. However, for Radiate Like This, they’ve honed in on their soft chill.
Akin to The xx, Radiate radiates a low-key nature that belies its emotional power. That does range from the darker pieces such as “Hips” and the sorrowful “Trouble” to the sunnier relax of “Stevie” or even the wryer closer, “Send Nudes”. This makes for a more cohesive record over all, if correspondingly the individual songs struggle to stand out.
Radiate Like This isn’t going to bowl over new listeners, but will ease fans in these troubled times.
