We Are the City : High School EP When British Columbia’s young We Are the City came out with In a Quiet World (QRO review) in 2009, it was a better slice of emo, but still felt emo.  With their debut American release, High School EP, the teens have certainly grown in musical ability and style.  High School can feel disjointed, but in an adult way.

High School opens with piano-led striped explosions in "Get Happy", and closes with more intimate explosives in "An Angel In White" – throughout the record We Are the City jump from quiet to loud, ignoring simple rhythm.  However, the stop-start to such pieces as "Happy New Year" and "That’s It, That’s All" isn’t off-putting or nauseating, but rather interesting and compelling.  One feels one knows the band, or rather knows their own confusion and emotional swings, even if "1987", which intimately details events from the singer’s birth (that he obviously couldn’t remember), makes you feel old…

In a Quiet World saw We Are the City as ‘good, but’ emo – High School sees them as disjointed, ‘but good.’  They’ve changed schools with success, and one looks forward to their accomplishments at college.
