In their long career, Weezer have had songs that range from the excellent (mostly nineties), distinctly disappointing (mostly aughts), and nice enough (mostly teens). Only on occasion do they reach their early heights, but also usually avoid their later lows. And they’ve got a history of making songs that you like, but only just like. SZNZ: Spring EP is nice, if only just nice.

The first of four planned “SZNZ” (pronounced “seasons”) EPs, one for each season, Spring is definitely a spring release, all cheery and upbeat. But it rarely goes more than that, save for more rock with “The Sound of Drums”, singing about watching Shakespeare in the Park on “Opening Night”, or a Nirvana reference in “A Little Bit of Love” (even there, can’t match the Green Day nod in “El Scorcho” – QRO live review of Weezer & Green Day together).

So, just accept SZNZ: Spring EP for what it is, and hope for some of the great Weezer this Summer.
