Wild Moccasins : Look TogetherWild Moccasins have so many elements that should make them ‘the next big thing,’ or at least the next act called ‘the next big thing.’ Their disco sound is electric, and doesn’t feel like a retread, in these disco-friendly times. They’ve got a compelling frontwoman in Zahira Gutierrez, as well as the more artsy-enigmatic sideman in Cody Swann. They’re just the right millennial age, still young enough to be young, without being too young. And they’ve got another strong record in Look Together.

Yes, Look Together mainly traffics in disco sounds, but it doesn’t feel one-note or a rehash. There’s the energy & uplift of “Longtime Listener”, and the disco-tragedy to the title track and the following “Desired Effect” – the latter also has the line, “With a little magic / This could be less tragic,” which is so great one can’t understand why “magic” and “tragic” haven’t been rhymed before. There’s the seductive “No Muse” (bonus seduction points for Gutierrez both talking about being “undressed,” and criticizing how she’s only a muse when “undressed”). There’s variety, from the airier “Temporary Vase” to the angular, almost eighties rocker “Seven to One”.

QRO long gave up saying who was gonna be big – hell, first met Wild Moccasins through one of our first ‘gonna be big’ acts, the long-gone Harlem Shakes. But the Houston band has so many of the right elements.
