Woven Bones : In and Out and Back Again Pity the poor garage-rock bands that are only putting out their debuts now.  A few years ago, their sounds might have been fresh – or at least their revival of old sounds might have been fresh – but by now, they just seem like also-rans.  Take Orlando-by-way-of-Austin Woven Bones, whose full-length debut, In and Out and Back Again, sounds like the same garage rock, Again.

Even by garage-rock standards, In and Out isn’t exactly revelatory, with nine tracks of lo-fi but undistorted garage guitars at varying speeds & swings.  Generally, the speedier the better, as faster pieces like "7 Year Mirror", "You’re Way With My Life", "Half Sunk Into the Seats" and "Couldn’t Help But Stare" stand out as catchier, while the slower up-downs to "Guess You Already Knew", "If It Feels Alright" and "Blind Conscience" are just alright.  There is a bit of a brattier, smarmier attitude to the vocals that’s usually limited to the party-garage subset of the genre, but it’s the same throughout, limiting its effectiveness.

Garage-rock is a fairly easy genre to perform, both in terms of skill needed & cash needed, so it’s no surprise that it’s become popular in these harder economic times.  And even if Woven Bones don’t look to match the more inspired of the genre (such as Crystal Stilts – QRO album review) or the more enjoyable (such as Phil & The Osophers – QRO spotlight on), they can still be the band that reminds you of those acts, like being this decade’s version of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (QRO live review).
